Welcome to NewRiver Portuguese Water Dogs
Welcome to New River Portuguese Water Dogs where our dogs are raised as members of our family in rural Halton Hills Ontario.
As a preservation breeder we take pride in the PWD's we produce. Our breeding dogs come from Champion bloodlines and have all been health tested . New River Portuguese Water Dog's foundation is the result of many breeders who worked tirelessly in preserving this beautiful breed by improving on the health, temperament and working drive of the dogs we have today.
Our puppies are such a joy to have around! We whelp and raise them here in our home in a dedicated "puppy room.". From day 3 to 16, we engage them in ENS exercises to give their development an amazing head start. And once their eyes are open and they're moving around more, we introduce them to all kinds of fun and stimulating activities and sounds! We want these little ones to be exposed to as much variety as possible to help them grow into confident, well-rounded pups. It's such an exciting process to be a part of, watching these adorable babies explore their world and thrive under our care. We pour our hearts into raising these pups, and it shows in how happy, healthy, and curious they are. This is truly a labor of love, and we wouldn't have it any other way!
All of our puppies are CKC registered, health checked, microchipped and have their first set of vaccines before leaving for their forever homes.
When you choose a dog from New River PWD's, you're not just getting a canine companion – you're welcoming a loyal, loving member to your family that is ready for new adventures!
About Portuguese Water Dogs
The PWD, has a long history as a working dog and fisherman's companion. They lived and worked on fishing boats alongside the crew. Their "jobs" included herding fish into nets, retrieving broken nets and delivering messages by swimming from boat to boat and from boat to shore. Due to their water-resistant coat and webbed feet, the Portuguese Water Dog excelled in these tasks. The PWD's loyal nature was prized by the fisherman. The PWD have a bright and biddable nature, making them easy to train and eager to please.
Portuguese Water Dogs come in a range of coat colours, including black, brown, White, Brown and White, and black and white. Their coats can be either curly or wavy. PWDs are a non shedding breed which requires regular grooming ( daily or every other day) This breed is considered "hypo allergenic" as it is non shedding however, if you or your family members suffer from allergies, it is important to spend some time with this breed to determine if it is a breed that will work for you and your family. ( This breed along with other " hypo allergenic" breeds may still cause reactions)
PWD's are an energetic and intelligent breed and excel in dog sports such as agility, rally, obedience and water work. They require daily physical and mental exercise. They love their people and are not a breed that should be left alone for long periods of time.
